Mobile PhonesHow do I use my PDA subscription on my mobile phone? If you signed up recently to a service which is available on both PDA and WAP, you will have received instructions on how to access the wireless version. If you subscribed before the new emails were sent out, you can still do it, as follows:
Depending upon your phone's browser, it may be able to retain the login details or an extended period, e.g. for as long as the phone retains power. How do I find what version of Mobile Windows my smartphone has?If your smartphone has a medium-sized screen plus a phone keypad (e.g. a Motorola MPX200 or an Orange SPV), it's probably running "Windows for Smartphones", in which case you can find the version by pressing the following keys:
The screen will display something like "Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 Version 3.0 (build 12255)" If it has a large PDA-style touch-sensitive screen and navigation buttons (e.g an O2 XDA or an Orange M1000), it's probably running Mobile Windows, in which case you can find the version as follows:
The display will read something like "Microsoft Pocket PC Version 4.20.1081 (build 13100)" Does Roundpoint support WAP and iMODE?We currently provide a number of services which are compatible with the majority of WAP phones on the market. If you check your phone's specifications and it mentions WAP 1.1, WAP 1.2.1, WAP 2.0, WML, HTML or XHTML, you should be able to use your phone with most of our text-based services such as newspapers and magazines. A few services require specific phone capabilites, e.g. video playback or a compatible OS such as Palm or Mobile Windows, and will be marked accordingly. Why does my crosswords link display "your mobile does not appear to support Java games"?Roundpoint has begin to implement Java for some of our crossword providers. Our servers should automatically detect your phone model but some network providers are not sending back the proper device IDs back to our servers. In that case you will have to modify your bookmark (add a small string at the end of the link) to inform our server what device you have.
PDAWhy can't I beam content to a friend?Roundpoint offers publishers a suite of Digital Rights Management (DRM) capabilities to restrict unauthorized distribution of content. In your instance, the publisher of the content you are trying to beam has elected to enable a portion of the DRM capabilities we offer. How can I get back issues of my subscription?Roundpoint was designed to act like an electronic newsagent, providing the latest issue of your chosen publication. We therefore do not archive news items or crosswords for later download. If you have a mobile phone, or a PDA with a wireless connection (or a Bluetooth connection to a compatible phone), you may be able to use your subscription with that - see our tranfers and upgrades page for more information. I've paid for my subscription but where is my content on my PDA?This could be happening for several reasons:
I am getting [UNLICENSED SITE] on my PDA, whats that?
Why can't I print out my subscription?Roundpoint offers publishers a suite of Digital Rights Management (DRM) capabilities to restrict unauthorized distribution of content. In your instance, the publisher of the content you are trying to print has elected to enable a portion of the DRM capabilities we offer. PalmOSWhy isn't my subscription isn't being updated on my Palm? The download may be incomplete or may have been damaged in transit, so you will need to clear the files out of your system as follows:
Can I install my subscription on an external memory card?Unfortunately it is not possible to run Roundpoint subscriptions from external memory at present, though we hope to support this feature at some point in the future. I can't find my content on my Palm. Where is it?First, make sure your Palm is in its cradle. Then, make sure you have Sync'd your Palm since you activated your Subscription. Once this has completed, look on your Palm for your subscription name, marked with a Roundpoint icon - news services will be in "Unfiled" and crosswords in "Games". How do I keep my subscriptions from returning to the 'Unfiled' category? This issue affects a number of programs that sync fresh .pdb files to your Palm. Unfortunately the Palm file format makes it impossible for the user to specify a category before synchronisation, and since we cannot second-guess which categories our subscribers use on their Palms, we have to use the default one, i.e. "Unfiled". The only solution is to install a third-party launcher which uses its own categories to override the Palm ones; once you assign an application to a category, it stays there. Of course if you add a new subscription title, it will go into "Unfiled" on the first HotSync. Examples of launchers which do this include LauncherX (can also assign a default category other than "Unfiled" for new content) and ZLauncher. We have also tested SilverScreen which, although a good product in other respects, sadly does not fix this specific problem. Other launchers have not been tested - please let us know if you find any others useful with this issue. Please note: Roundpoint cannot take responsibility for third-party software, which is installed at the user's own risk. For a list of third-party launchers for your Palm, please see the relevant Palm Expert Guide. How do I find what version of Palm Desktop I am using?
I use PocketMirror, how do I get Roundpoint files onto my Palm?PocketMirror, a syncing software package from Chapura, had some early issues where it would take over control of installations of applications and files outside of the Microsoft applications. This was very apparent in version 3.0. They seemed to have done an excellent job fixing the bugs and released a free update. Additionally, it will help to install Palm Desktop 4.1 if you don't already have it. How do I find what version of PalmOS my device has?To identify the version number of Palm OS:
PocketPCWhy isn't my subscription isn't being updated on my Pocket PC?The download may be incomplete or may have been damaged in transit, so you will need to clear the files out of your system as follows:
Where did the 'Roundpoint Sites' folder on my Pocket PC go?This is because you don't have the Roundpoint client installed. It should be automatically installed when you download your first subscription, but occasionally the download is incomplete or corrupted. See FAQ: My subscription isn't being updated on my Pocket PC for how to solve this problem. How do I find what version of Windows CE / Pocket PC my device has?To identify the version of Windows CE and Pocket PC devices:
I can't find my content on my Pocket PC. Where is it?Make sure your device is in its cradle and has an active connection with your PC. You should see a Green Active Sync icon in your System Tray (lower right-hand of your PC screen). If the icon is grey, you don't have an active connection to your PC. Try turning your device off and then on while in the cradle to make a connection. If you still can't get connected, please refer to your manual. Only when your PocketPC is actively connected to your PC will Subscription Manager be able to install your mobile content. If you are sure your device is connected, tap the Windows icon on the upper-left-hand corner of your PDA screen. A window will drop down. Choose 'Programs' and then 'Roundpoint Sites'. Inside the 'Roundpoint Sites' folder you should find your edition. Is my new Windows Mobile 5 compatible with Roundpoint?Roundpoint is currently engineering a solution for Windows Mobile 5. Note that WM5 is further versioned for different sets of devices and our aim is to deliver the expected robust Roundpoint solution regardless of the particular version being used by the device. Our OTA deliverables are now servicing more and more handset models (You can still access your subscription over the live mobile website). We expect to release the full Roundpoint feature set for WM5 users in the very near future. Thanks for your patience while we get this to a high overall standard. Payments and CancellationsMy subscription/credit card has expired, what can I do?You will need to provide a current credit card so that we can go on taking payments. WorldPay paymentsIf you receive payment acknowledgements from WorldPay, you can update your account details yourself by logging on to support.worldpay.com/shopper/ using the username and password which was emailed to you when you signed up. If you have lost this email, you can get the password emailed to your registered email address by supplying a transaction ID from any payment receipt. If you no longer have access to your registered email address, you will have to cancel the subscription by contacting customer service and sign up again through the publisher's website. Other paymentsIf your payment acknowledgements come from a company other than WorldPay (e.g. NetBanx), please contact customer service. How do I re-subscribe?For your security we are unable to initiate credit card payments on your behalf. Therefore, if you wish to re-subscribe, or to re-activate a subscription to which you no longer have access, you will need to sign up again through the publisher's website. How do I cancel my subscription? There are two ways to do this:
Why has a payment has been taken without my permission? There are a number of possible explanations for this:
Whatever the case, please contact customer service explaining the problem, and we will be happy to refund any unused portion of your subscription as appropriate to the circumstances. Subscription ManagerHow do I sync my subscription from more than one PC?You can install Subscription Manager and use the same subscription file (.rps file) for your home and work machines. But first you must make sure that you have your PDA properly set up on both computers. Refer to your PDA documentation for complete installation and set up directions. To install Subscription Manager on your other machine:
You can now use your PDA with both computers to download content. What are all the Network and Firewall Issues? If you have recently installed XP Service Pack 2 or updated your copy of Windows XP using Automatic Update, the new security settings interfere with many programs that use the Internet. Please see Microsoft's knowledge base for comprehensive instructions on how to adjust the security settings for individual programs: Some programs seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2. Older versions of Windows with firewalls installed on them (or on a network, e.g. connected wirelessly to a broadband router) can also block Subscription Manager. In this case, we recommend that you turn off any security programs on your PC (or network) for a few moments whilst you install the file, then turn them back on - these programs do not seem to interfere with ordinary subscription downloads. If you are on a dialup account, you may also find it helpful to manually connect to the Internet for the installation, instead of relying on Subscription Manager's auto-dial. More about the XP firewall from Microsoft's support pages. How do I safely uninstall Subscription Manager?First, make sure that Subscription Manager is not running. Look in the system tray in the lower right corner to see if you have the Subscription Manager icon there. If not then it is not running. If the icon is present in the system tray then double-click on it and open the Subscription Manager main window. Click on the STOP button and then click on the "yes" button to indicate that you do want to stop. Now you can go to the Windows Control Panel and select "Add/Remove Programs". Scroll down to find the listing for Subscription Manager and then click on the "Remove" button. How can I reinstall Subscription Manager and my subscription?First, make sure that Subscription Manager is not running. Install the new software from the Download Center. Save it to your hard disk and then double-click on the rpsminst.exe file. Follow all the directions for installing Subscription Manager. Once Subscription Manager is installed, double-click on the .rps file that you received. That will configure your subscription. What does it mean when I try to activate my subscription, I get a 'Setup Failed' error? There are three common causes of this problem:
I don't have a subscription file (.rps file). How do I get another? Please fill in our support form and we can send you another one. Why is it when I try to activate my subscription, I get a 'Can't connect to website' error? As you probably have discovered, even the best Internet connection is prone to interruptions and down-time. It may simply be that the signal from your PC to our server took so long that the connection was lost. Please try again later. Subscription Manager has stopped working, what now? There are a number of reasons why this might happen:
What does a Login Error in the Status window mean? There are two possible explanations for this situation:
Can I delete the icons on my desktop? The rpsminst.exe file is the Subscription Manager installer and you should keep it in some folder in case you need to reinstall Subscription Manager. The file that ends in .rps (this file is often a number like 010233.rps or the name of your subscription such as times.rps) is the subscription file and you should also keep this in a folder in case you need to reinstall. You can keep the shortcut file on your desktop or delete it. If you need to open Subscription Manager you can double click on the Subscription Manager in the system tray or you can click on the Start button and then go to Programs->Roundpoint ->Subscription Manager. I would like to use my subscription with my new PDA, how do I transfer it?If you have replaced your PDA, you don't need to reinstall Subscription Manager or your Subscription setup file. You just need to make sure that Subscription Manager is aware of your new PDA and can send data to it.
How do I find my Subscription Manager log file?To locate your log file, do the following:
How do I open Subscription Manager?Look for a Roundpoint icon in the Windows system tray (usually located at the bottom right of your screen near the clock display). This will show that Subscription Manager is running in the background, rather like ActiveSync or Palm HotSync. Double-click on the icon to open the Subscription Manager main window. Why won't Subscription Manager on my laptop download subscriptions? This is not a problem specific to Subscription Manager; it is most often caused by a failure by the network hardware and/or drivers to handle hibernation mode correctly. The easiest solution is simply to reboot your laptop to get the network connection running properly again, and then do a manual download of your subscription as follows:
How do I remove/replace one of my subscriptions?
Why doesn't Subscription Manager appear to start?Subscription Manager is a background process, similar to ActiveSync or Palm HotSync. When it starts, instead of opening a window, it places an icon in the Windows System Tray (next the the clock in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen). The icon will 'pulse' when Subscription Manager is downloading files. N.B. If you are using Windows XP, the icon may be hidden - click on the left-pointing arrow to show all icons. |
